How to whiten your teeth at home

It can be pretty pricey to go and have your teeth professionally whitened at a salon or dentist.

So im going to show you a few ways of how to do it at home for a fraction of the price!

Oil pulling

How to do it – Take a tablespoon of coconut oil and pop it in your mouth. Let it melt and swish it around your mouth for 10-15 minutes making sure not to swallow any of the oil. After the 10-15 minutes spit out the oil and brush your teeth with your normal toothpaste.

How it works – The oil pulls out the impurities and bacteria in and around your teeth which leaves them whiter. With the coconut oil’s antibacterial properties it eliminates bad breath, reduces any inflammation and can even cure tooth decay.

If you are able to stomach a mouth full of oil for 15 minutes then this could really benefit you more than just whitening your teeth. You can oil pull as much as u want, actually the more you do it the better. I tried it once and I personally did not like it but dont let that put you off. To each their own.

Baking soda/powder and lemon juice paste

How to do it – Put 1 teaspoon of baking soda/powder in a small tub, then add lemon juice and mix until you get the consistency of a paste. The mixture will fizz up as the acid reacts with the baking soda. Once you feel you have the consistency of a paste then rub the paste into your teeth for about a minute then leave for about 3 minutes. Do not leave the paste on for longer than 5 minutes. After the 3 minutes brush your teeth with the paste still in your mouth and you can also use any you may have left in the tub, swill out your mouth and brush your teeth again with your normal toothpaste.

How it works – The citric acid from the lemon bleaches your teeth and the baking soda/powder acts as an exfoliant and removes stains.

This method is effective but can be harmful to the enamel on your teeth so I dont recommend doing this too often. I would recommend only 2 – 3 times a month. I personally have seen results using this recipe, it tastes a little funky and if you have any cuts or splits on your lips or gums it can sting like crazy.

Activated charcoal powder

How to do it – Wet your toothbrush and dip it in to the powder and brush your teeth for a minute. You will find that initially the powder will dry out your mouth but this is just the powder working its magic. Then leave the powder on for 2 – 3 minutes. Spit and rinse your mouth out well, then brush your teeth again with your normal toothpaste. Repeat this process once a day for 3-5 days depending on how stained your teeth are.

How it works – Activated charcoal is very porous so it acts like a sponge and pulls out the toxins and bacteria. Which aids in whitening your teeth.

Charcoal powder looks a bit scary but it doesn’t have any taste or odor. This stuff can be really messy so make sure you do it over the sink. I also recommend doing it before you go to bed at night as you can get little black bits stuck in between your teeth which should disappear by the morning. I get mine from ebay its about £3 -£4. Bare in mind some people dont see any difference after using the charcoal but I suppose you have to try it to find out if it works for you.

Whitening strips

How to do it – Follow the instructions on the packaging as directions my differ from brand to brand.

How it works – Again depending on the brand you get it may differ but the more conventional strips contain a gel containing  hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide which bleaches the stains on your teeth.

I have only ever tried the Crest 3D strips. So my experience with whitening strips is not very extensive. They are more expensive than the other methods I have listed and for me personally they gave just the same results. Also as they contain peroxide I cant imagine them being too great on the enamel on your teeth just like the lemon juice method.

I have tried and tested all these methods, some more than others. For me personally the baking soda and lemon juice method is most effective for me and its the cheapest as you get more for your money.

I hope you found this post informative and helps you decide on a method that would be best to suit you.
