How to whiten your teeth at home

It can be pretty pricey to go and have your teeth professionally whitened at a salon or dentist.

So im going to show you a few ways of how to do it at home for a fraction of the price!

Oil pulling

How to do it – Take a tablespoon of coconut oil and pop it in your mouth. Let it melt and swish it around your mouth for 10-15 minutes making sure not to swallow any of the oil. After the 10-15 minutes spit out the oil and brush your teeth with your normal toothpaste.

How it works – The oil pulls out the impurities and bacteria in and around your teeth which leaves them whiter. With the coconut oil’s antibacterial properties it eliminates bad breath, reduces any inflammation and can even cure tooth decay.

If you are able to stomach a mouth full of oil for 15 minutes then this could really benefit you more than just whitening your teeth. You can oil pull as much as u want, actually the more you do it the better. I tried it once and I personally did not like it but dont let that put you off. To each their own.

Baking soda/powder and lemon juice paste

How to do it – Put 1 teaspoon of baking soda/powder in a small tub, then add lemon juice and mix until you get the consistency of a paste. The mixture will fizz up as the acid reacts with the baking soda. Once you feel you have the consistency of a paste then rub the paste into your teeth for about a minute then leave for about 3 minutes. Do not leave the paste on for longer than 5 minutes. After the 3 minutes brush your teeth with the paste still in your mouth and you can also use any you may have left in the tub, swill out your mouth and brush your teeth again with your normal toothpaste.

How it works – The citric acid from the lemon bleaches your teeth and the baking soda/powder acts as an exfoliant and removes stains.

This method is effective but can be harmful to the enamel on your teeth so I dont recommend doing this too often. I would recommend only 2 – 3 times a month. I personally have seen results using this recipe, it tastes a little funky and if you have any cuts or splits on your lips or gums it can sting like crazy.

Activated charcoal powder

How to do it – Wet your toothbrush and dip it in to the powder and brush your teeth for a minute. You will find that initially the powder will dry out your mouth but this is just the powder working its magic. Then leave the powder on for 2 – 3 minutes. Spit and rinse your mouth out well, then brush your teeth again with your normal toothpaste. Repeat this process once a day for 3-5 days depending on how stained your teeth are.

How it works – Activated charcoal is very porous so it acts like a sponge and pulls out the toxins and bacteria. Which aids in whitening your teeth.

Charcoal powder looks a bit scary but it doesn’t have any taste or odor. This stuff can be really messy so make sure you do it over the sink. I also recommend doing it before you go to bed at night as you can get little black bits stuck in between your teeth which should disappear by the morning. I get mine from ebay its about £3 -£4. Bare in mind some people dont see any difference after using the charcoal but I suppose you have to try it to find out if it works for you.

Whitening strips

*

How to do it – Follow the instructions on the packaging as directions my differ from brand to brand.

How it works – Again depending on the brand you get it may differ but the more conventional strips contain a gel containing  hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide which bleaches the stains on your teeth.

I have only ever tried the Crest 3D strips. So my experience with whitening strips is not very extensive. They are more expensive than the other methods I have listed and for me personally they gave just the same results. Also as they contain peroxide I cant imagine them being too great on the enamel on your teeth just like the lemon juice method.

I have tried and tested all these methods, some more than others. For me personally the baking soda and lemon juice method is most effective for me and its the cheapest as you get more for your money.

I hope you found this post informative and helps you decide on a method that would be best to suit you.

How to grow long, healthy hair

I’ve been growing my hair for about 3 years now and I just wanted to share the things i’ve been doing that I think has helped me grow my long, lush locks.

Drinking water everyday is probably the most important thing you can do to grow healthy hair. In order to keep your hair and skin healthy it needs to be full of moisture and the most effective way to do that is to drink lots and lots and lots of water.

I take a vitamin called ‘hair skin nails’ that I get from Holland and Barrett, which is full of lots of goodies to help keep them healthy. I saw a slight difference but I found also combining it with a multivitamin (specifically the Healthy start vitamins for women) just gave it a boost and I really noticed the effects. My hair is softer, shinier, and just overall looks and feels better.

I suppose you know by now but split ends are a hair growers worst enemy, so getting those snipped off is a must if you want to get long hair. I dont get my hair cut at a salon I cut it myself and have done for about 4-5 years now. I am so scared that they will cut too much off and ill be back to square one. I probably cut my hair about every 3-4 months and I only cut the bare minimum off like literally the split ends. If your not used to cutting your own hair then get it done by someone who knows what they are doing. I don’t recommend just hacking away at your hair but if you feel confident in doing it yourself, then make sure to use the correct tools and do your research by watching videos on how to cut your hair. I recommend watching Bebexo’s video its pretty fool proof https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ykkLUsJPdtk

Keeping your hair conditioned is so important so I like to apply a hair mask once a week. I like to use coconut oil because it has so many benefits and its my all time favourite. I also like castor oil and you can add little bit of peppermint or rosemary essential oil for a relaxing aromatherapy hair treatment. I like to do this on a sunday when I know for definate there’s no chance of the postman or delivery man catching me with a head full of oil and a face mask (its happened before) also I can keep it on all day then wash my hair in the evening and its clean and fresh to start the week.

For me this was a game changer. When I make the effort and can actually remember (coz ive got a memory worse than a goldfish!) I tip my head upside down and massage my scalp for about 4 minutes. This increases blood flow which stimulates hair growth. I did a small experiment once testing out this method. I measured the length of my hair, then over the course of 2 weeks I massaged my head every other night before bed for 4 minutes. At the end of the 2 weeks I measured my hair again and it had grown an inch and a half! IN JUST 2 WEEKS!! I highly suggest trying this experiment for yourself if you are trying to grow your hair to see if it works for you.

As important as it is to have a healthy diet and it would probably help towards hair growth. I would be a hypocrite if I told you to eat more healthy food to grow your hair. My diet isnt the best so it really wouldn’t be right of me to tell you to do something that I dont do myself.

Just saying.

I really hope this gave you some information and helps towards growing your lovely lengths.

Tips for coloring your hair

So i’ve recently coloured my a hair dusky dark pink/ultra violet shade and I am in love with it!

I loved the idea of having brightly coloured hair or just a colour that wasn’t brown,

but always had these niggling thoughts at the back of my mind …….

It wont suit me

The bleach will ruin my hair

I might mess it up

What will people think

Everyone will look at me

BLAH BLAH BLAH!!!!

So heres a few things I did to make the process of a colour change easier on my hair and my fear of the ‘ordinary’ thinking minds of others

  1. I stopped thinking about other peoples opinions

People will always have an opinion on you or what you’re doing but that’s all they are OPINIONS. I’ve recently come to learn that you should never let other peoples opinions or feelings of you stop you from being yourself.

2. I stopped putting myself down

I came to the conclusion that if all these other people can have fun coloured hair then why cant I? We can be our own worst critics, and sometimes you just need to tell yourself to shut up and go with it. So I did.

3. I added the colour gradually over time

I feel this one is important in 2 ways

A. Bleaching or lifting can be really harsh on your hair so I did mine gradually over a few months and gave it some love by applying a moisture rich mask/oil now and again keeping it as healthy as I could. I like using castor or coconut oil as they are so good for your hair.

B. I feel that dramatically going from one colour to another can be bit of a shock to the system and then you may not like the sudden change, so by doing it gradually you get a feel of what its going to look like and then can decide if you want to continue on or change up the colour.

This is the ‘warm brown’ colour I was for about 8-9 years

And this was after my 1st time colouring as you can see there is very little colour I was just concentrating on keeping it healthy

This is the rose gold I achieved

When I dyed the ends purple.

You can watch this video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v1OR2XlvaM8

Then I took the plunge and did it

and you can watch the video to how I achieved this colour here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dKeg9fXxYFY&t=4s

So im going to end this post with some friendly advice and a little disclaimer

If you are thinking of dying your hair yourself, make sure you do your research and get as much advice as possible on techniques and products and always follow the instructions given. You could also get advice from someone that works in a salon and they can also advise you on a colour that best suits you.

Make sure you give yourself sometime to think about it to make sure its what you really want.

If your doing a dramatic change for the 1st time and never coloured your hair yourself then I do advise you to go to a professional it may be a lot more expensive than a DIY job but at least you know your hair will turn out good

Ive been colouring my own hair for about 12 years now so I have experience and I know how my hair will react to the products

Admittedly my partner isn’t the biggest fan of the colour of my hair, but I am obsessed with it and it makes me happy. Even though I love him and I obviously care what he thinks, if I want to do something that I know will make me happy im going to do it.

Never let anyone stop you from being you
